GENERAL MENU

WHAT IS CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NURSING?

Christian Science nursing is a practical, spiritual ministry that supports anyone who relies on Christian Science for healing.

Established in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, (Article VIII; Section 31), this caring activity is grounded in the Bible-based

teachings of Christian Science, and particularly those of Christ Jesus.

This Article, the source of the Christian Science nurse’s authority and scope of practice, states:

“A member of The Mother Church who represents himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick. The cards of such persons may be inserted in The Christian Science Journal under rules established by the publishers.”

Christian Science nurses are available to help anyone relying on Christian Science treatment for healing. They provide skilful, practical assistance

and care to meet individual needs, carried out with prayer, wisdom, and compassion. A Christian Science nurse works independently in

an individual’s home, or for UK Christian Science houses and visiting services.

TRAINING AND INSURANCE

Christian Science houses/facilities have public liability insurance covering Christian Science nurse employees. Private duty Christian Science nurses must seek their own public liability insurance. Appropriate statutory training is required for all Christian Science nurses. Christian Science nurses working for a Christian Science House or organisation (like a Visiting Christian Science Nursing Service) will receive this training as part of their employment. If you’re a private duty Christian Science nurse, you must complete the appropriate statutory training.

GOVERNANCE AND STANDARDS

Maintaining high care standards with proper accreditation and complying with regulation is an important part of Christian Science nursing in the UK. The Commission accredits Christian Science nursing organisations and facilities in accordance with standards established to achieve high quality care. In most instances, the Commission’s accreditation standards exceed CQC requirements.

THE COMMISSION FOR ACCREDITATION OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NURSING ORGANISATIONS/FACILITIES (The Commission)

https://csncommission.org/

The purpose of The Commission is to establish, improve, promote, and maintain standards for the operation of Christian Science nursing facilities, their affiliated Christian Science nurse’s education programmes, and visiting Christian Science nursing services.
